Note:
  • Tango and Buleria classes consist of pataitas (short passages). They are not full choreographies. These classes are suitable for those who wish to learn short passages to build their own choreographies. Tango 1 and 2 are two separate courses and consist of materials. When used together, may form a tango choreography. The same applies to Buleria 1 and 2. Tango is suitable for elementary students. Buleria is suitable for intermediate students. Students will dance to live cante and guitar.
  • Tango por fiesta and buleria por fiesta classes are not choreography classes. They concentrate on applying tango and buleria choreography (learned in tango and buleria courses) to cante, for improvisational purposes. These classes are suitable for dancers who wish to understand how to improvise, and for those who wish to hone their por fiesta or improvisational skills. This class is the perfect companion to Tango and Buleria courses where you can try the pataitas that you learned, or practice your own steps to live cante. Students will dance to live cante and guitar.
  • Liviana constitutes one complete choreography and suitable for intermediate/advanced students.
  • Técnica 1 and 2 (two separate courses) consist of different materials and include footwork and flamenco body movement training.  Both are suitable for all levels of dancers.
  • Review classes at a later date will be available for all classes.
  • Materials learned in this workshop will be presented at MCCC Student Recital in Fall 2023.

ABOUT TOMÁS ARROQUERO
Tomás Arroquero began dancing in Australia before moving to Spain in 1993, where he lived, studied and worked at the source of flamenco for 20 years.  He undertook formal training for seven years in Madrid at El Centro de Arte Flamenco y Danza Española Amor de Dios. While studying with founding members Maria Magdalena, El Ciro and Paco Romero, Tomás began to work in theatre and tablao settings across Spain and Europe.

Establishing a good rapport with several companies, Tomás collaborated on numerous productions with a conglomerate of Madrid and Jerez-based artist, including Clara Ramona and Isabel Olivide in Madrid, Mi Flamenco in the UK and Gisa Michelón in Germany.  Performances highlights include a season at the prestigious tablao Casa Patas in Madrid, The Royal Concert Hall in Dublin, The Gasteig Cultural Centre in Munich, London’s Hackney Empire, Laban Centre and sharing the stage with Tomatito at the infamous Royal Albert Hall.  These performances paved the way for Tomás to further his own explorations with flamenco. For this reason he eventually moved to Jerez de la Frontera (Cadiz) where he experienced alternative meaning in the art form, living amongst Andalusian culture.

In 2001 he studied with local artists Ana Maria Lopez and Maria Bermudez revered by their mentorship and expertise in the art form. Tomás continued to perform steadily, working at Peña El Lagá del Tio Parrilla and Dama Juana in Jerez. He also performed regularly for 6-years as a soloist with the London-based company Flamenco Express.  In 2007 he moved to Seville and continued to explore the resonance of the form with Isabel Bayón and Alejandro Granados to name a few.  Simultaneously Tomás found momentum teaching flamenco internationally and continues to have a presence in the UK, Taiwan and Hong Kong. He currently teaches in Melbourne and maintains partnerships with a few dance schools in Australia, including The Australian Ballet Summer School annually.  He has also made several guest appearances with Diana Reyes Flamenco in Sydney and Areti Flamenco in Adelaide. Aside from being devoted to teaching Tomas is passionate about making innovative work in collaborative contexts.

Tomás is the producer and director of his own company Sonidos Flamencos, which brings together a number of Melbourne based dancers and musicians to perform. Various ensembles have appeared at The Robbie Burns Hotel in Collingwood, 45 Downstairs in Flinders Lane and toured regionally in venues across Victoria.  Furthermore Tomás has completed a series of postgraduate studies, fulfilling a desire to shift flamenco into a broader context of contemporary dance making. These investigations set in motion a curiosity for Tomas to explore dance through a somatic-based movement practice.  Perceiving dance through a kinaesthetic lens has opened up rich territory for him to stretch the boundaries of the form, and support his interest in the ongoing, lived and practical process of renegotiating flamenco’s defining characteristics.  New works of note include Pasodoble (2011), Calle Nueva, Sideline (2012), Fragmentos (2015) and Water Bodies (2018/19).

Several production career highlights include:
  • Dance accompanist with the world-renowned flamenco guitarist José Antonio Rodríguez and Trio at the International Guitar Festival, Adelaide Festival Centre (2014)
  • Danza Viva’s production of Capriccio Flamenco (2012)
  • Flamenco Fire (2008/2009)
  • Compañeros presented by Gisa Michelón (Germany 2010)
  • Unearthed produced by Mi Flamenco (UK 2007/2010)
  • Herencia Flamenca (US 2007)
  • Esencia Flamenca (Taiwan 2006)
  • Díemlo Tú Flamenco directed by Isabel Olavide (Spain 2003/2006)
  • Dance soloist with the company Flamenco Express (UK 2001 – 2006)
  • Tierra, Agua, Fuego y Aire, produced by the company Alegria (Spain & UK 2000/2003)

Postgraduate achievements comprise of:
  • Master of Fine Art (Dance 2014 – 2016), Graduate Research at the Faculty of VCA and MCM, University of Melbourne
  • Diploma in Creative Industries (2013) at Victoria University
  • Diploma in Performance Creation (Choreography 2012) at the VCA, University of Melbourne
